Decree Upgrades Paper

Moscow () -- Rossiiskiye Vesti, a daily newspaper funded by the federal government, is to provide an official platform for President Boris Yeltsin, according to a decree the president signed this week.

The decree makes the president's office co-publisher of Rossiiskiye Vesti, along with the paper's workers.

Editor in chief Valery Kucher acknowledged that the president's office will be able to use the space it pays for to express its views. But both he and a spokesman for Yeltsin said that the president intended nothing more than to support the paper financially.
