Christie Sets Record

Olympic and world 100 meter champion Linford Christie of Britain ran 60 meters in 6.48 seconds to set a new European indoor record.

On Tuesday, Christie shaved three hundredths of a second off the mark he had previously shared with three other sprinters.

"For once, everything worked out fine from the start," said Christie, who beat Canadian Bruny Surin into second place by two hundredths of a second. Kenyan Paul Ereng ran the fastest indoor time of the year in the 800 meters in one minute 46.19 seconds.
