Border Guard Shot

WARSAW () -- A Belarussian guard was seriously wounded when Polish and Belarussian border units accidentally exchanged shots in a chase after illegal aliens, the PAP news agency reported Tuesday.

The shootout occurred around midnight Sunday near Swisloczany in the northeastern Bialystok province. Four Belarussian guards entered the Polish territory chasing a group of people illegally crossing the border and opened fire at Polish guards by mistake, according to a statement by Poland's national Border Guard headquarters.

In the dark, Polish guards returned fire, thinking they were being shot at by those illegally crossing the border, it said.

A 19-year-old Belarussian, shot in the head and abdomen, was hospitalized in serious condition in Bialystok, PAP said.
