MINSK, Belarus () -- Belarussian President Alexander Lukashenko called Tuesday for his parliament to be dissolved within a week and for a referendum to be staged on extending his powers and forging closer ties with Russia.
But the chairman of parliament rejected the proposal and said no such referendum was necessary.
Lukashenko said the poll would be held along with parliamentary elections on May 14 and he would ask voters to extend his power
