Atherton's Big Return

LEEDS, England () -- Mike Atherton came through his first public examination after the dirt-in-the-pocket affair with honors -- and a battling 99 -- in the second test against South Africa.

Atherton, who considered quitting as England captain in the wake of the rumpus that followed the Lord's test controversy, was given a warm welcome Thursday by the Headingley crowd.

Opener Atherton departed 320 minutes later to a standing ovation after a typically resolute innings that lifted England to 268 for four.
