Ukraine Plans to Go Green

Ukraine is seeking to generate about 20 percent of its energy from environmentally friendly sources in three to four years, Deputy Prime Minister Andriy Klyuev said Friday.

The government is also aiming to produce about 8 percent of its energy from renewable sources including solar and wind energy by then, Klyuev said. The level is almost zero now, he said.

About 10 to 12 percent will be hydroelectric power, which currently accounts for 6 percent of produced energy, Klyuev said. The country will be able to extract 10 billion cubic meters of natural gas a year from shale deposits and from methane.
