The Moscow Times

Russia will create a state e-mail system on the .РФ domain, Communication and Press Minister Igor Shchyogolev said Thursday.

“A state e-mail system will focus on providing services to a broad swathe of society and will use a Cyrillic domain,” Shchyogolev said Thursday in Minsk, RIA-Novosti reported.

Wednesday was the first day for registering Cyrillic domain names, with government organs and trademark holders being the only ones permitted in the first round.

In the first day of registration, applications for Cyrillic domain names were received from companies including Hewlett Packard, ConsultantPlus and Yandex, said Andrei Vorobyov, head of the RU-Center domain registrar.

Tabloid 7 Dnei, law portal Garant and the Communist Party also registered Cyrillic domains, he said, Itar-Tass reported.
