Russian Lawmakers Splurge on Black Caviar Amid Crisis

The economic crisis which has forced Russians to slash their spending even on essential goods has not forced the country's lawmakers to abandon their favorite delicacies, such as black caviar.

Russian Caviar House, the company that supplies caviar to the Russian parliament, hasn't faced any decrease in demand amid the recession, the TASS news agency reported Friday, citing general director Saodat Sultanova.

“We are the suppliers to the State Duma, the Federation Council. We have very serious clients and they did not decrease their orders,” Sultanova said.

Caviar is still in demand, as those who can afford to buy food products worth more than $100 have been less affected by the crisis, according to Sultanova.

As their “serious clients” do not plan to reduce consumption of the expensive delicacy, the caviar company is performing well despite the bad economic climate.

“We weren't not particularly affected by the crisis, we did not have to cut staff — on the contrary, we had a shortage of staff, because there was a very big number of orders,” Sultanova was quoted as saying by TASS.
