Turkey will not engage in ground military operation in Syria without UN Security council approval, Ankara’s UN envoy said, the Interfax news agency reported Saturday.
“Turkey acts according to international laws and we will not take part in a ground operation in Syria without the UN or international coalition’s approval,” Turkey's UN Ambassador Halit Celik said.
An emergency UN Security Council meeting was held to discuss a ceasefire in Syria that was supposed to take effect on Friday, but failed following intense fighting, Interfax reported.
Russia, which has been carrying out air strikes in Syria, urged the UN to pressure Turkey into halting its shelling of Kurdish forces in the country's north, but the bid was rejected by Western powers.
