The City Duma's monuments commission has rejected a proposal to set up a memorial to opposition leader Boris Nemtsov on the Moscow bridge where he was shot dead in February, the Interfax news agency reported Tuesday.
The commission's chair, Lev Lavryonov, said in a meeting that a plaque on the site of the murder would be a “memorial to the murder, not to the person,” the report said.
Yevgeny Gerasimov, head of the Duma's commission for culture and mass communications, agreed with him, saying “there is no tradition in Moscow of commemorating murders.”
The proposal was filed by Russian opposition politicians Dmitry and Gennady Gudkov, Alexei Navalny, Mikhail Kasyanov and others, according to Interfax.
Nemtsov was shot dead on the Bolshoi Moskvoretsky Bridge on the evening of Feb. 27. Several men are currently awaiting trial for the killing.
