Sunset on Thursday marked the beginning of Eid al-Fitr for Muslims worldwide.

The holiday, whose name translates to the “Festival of Breaking the Fast” in Arabic, celebrates the end of Ramadan.

Muslims across Russia took to the streets and their places of worship to pray, feast and celebrate.

Islam is the second-largest religion in Russia, with more than 15% of the country’s population estimated to be followers.

Russian Muslims come from a diverse set of ethnic backgrounds, including in the North Caucasus and the Volga republics of Tatarstan and Bashkortostan.
