Russian Human Rights Ombudswoman Pamfilova Appointed Election Commission Head

Ella Pamfilova, head of the presidential human rights council, has replaced Vladimir Churov as the head of the Russian Central Election Commission, the Interfax news agency reported Monday.

Pamfilova's candidacy was supported by 14 out of 15 members of the Commission. She has resigned her position as human rights ombudswoman.

Nikolay Bulayev, former member of the Federation Council, has been elected deputy chairman of the Russian Central Election Commission, the TASS news agency reported.

Churov held the post of the head of the Central Election Commission since 2007 but his term expired on March 27.
