Russian Police Kill 6 Suspected Insurgents in Dagestan

Russian authorities say six suspected insurgents have been killed in a raid in the capital of the republic of Dagestan.

Police initially said that two suspected rebels were killed in the Saturday operation at an apartment building in Makhachkala, but the National Anti-Terrorism Committee later said another four were killed when police searched other apartments in the building.

A committee statement said those killed were suspected in an array of terrorist actions, including attacks on police.

For more than a decade, Dagestan has been hit with bombings, attacks on police and kidnappings blamed on Islamic militants.
