'Killer' Knocked Off Moped by Police

A man was detained on suspicion of murder immediately after a contract-style killing was reportedly carried out in central Moscow early Thursday evening, RIA Novosti reported.

A man riding a moped shot at a man traveling in a Mercedes car on Ulitsa Pokrovka before attempting to flee the scene, news agencies reported. He was however knocked off his moped by a police officer driving his own vehicle who had witnessed the incident, and was detained at the scene, RIA Novosti said, citing a police source.

Blogger Ivan Mitin described the incident in a LiveJournal post shortly after the incident, complete with photographs of the detained and bloodied murder suspect lying on the ground and of a black Mercedes that had crashed into a wall on Ulitsa Pokrovka.

"A moped was lying on the tram rails together with a bag and a bright yellow sombrero hat. A handgun fitted with a silencer lay on the asphalt..." Mitin wrote.

"Do you at least know why I killed him? He cheated old people out of their apartments," the blogger cited the detained man as saying.
