Governor to Serve New Term

President Dmitry Medvedev has appointed Krasnodar Governor Alexander Tkachyov to a new term, the Kremlin said Sunday.

Tkachyov thanked the president on Twitter: "Of course, I can't but be happy! I am grateful to the president for his trust. I won't fail the people of the Kuban region!"

Krasnodar's regional legislature is expected to confirm Medvedev's appointment, but local Communists said they were unlikely to support the governor because they opposed the course taken by United Russia, whose regional division is headed by Tkachyov.

Tkachyov has served as governor of the Krasnodar region for more than 11 years, first as an elected governor and then as a political appointee.
