MAKHACHKALA — Gunmen opened fire on the convoy of Dagestan's top anti-extremism campaigner on Friday, killing two guards, officials said.
A car posing as a local taxi in Makhachkala pulled up on the road alongside the convoy belonging to Akhmed Bataliyev, chief of Dagestan's Center for Anti-Extremist Activities, and started shooting. "Two people were killed," said a source at the local Investigative Committee, speaking on the condition of anonymity.
Bataliyev wasn't injured. Dagestani rebels claimed responsibility.
