25,000 Toyotas Recalled

Toyota drivers are being invited for free checkups and maintenance as the company recalls 1.7 million vehicles worldwide because of fuel leaks.

In Russia, the recalls, announced Wednesday, include 21,735 Toyota Avensis sedans in 2- and 2.4-liter models built between Aug. 23, 2002 and Sept. 9, 2008. Also affected are 3,141 imported Lexus IS 250 luxury models built between Aug. 31, 2007 and February 2009.

Toyota officials said there were no safety issues. “We’re calling it a ‘special service campaign,’ not a recall, because it is voluntary and it is a minor issue,” said Yevgenia Teterina of Toyota Motor Russia.
