The race for Tuxtla Gutierrez was the most important of 109 mayoral posts contested in Sunday's elections in Chiapas, a backward state where Zapatista Indian rebels took up arms last year. Forty state legislators were also chosen.
Elsewhere, the PRI suffered a cut in its support compared to previous elections but was still stronger than its rivals. Ruling party leaders said they won 55 percent of all votes.
