United Teen Cracks the Big League
Scholes steps in because Mark Hughes, Ryan Giggs and Roy Keane are all expected to be ruled out with injuries after the 0-0 draw at Galatasaray in the Champions' League on Wednesday.
United has already slipped six points behind league leaders Newcastle United but manager Alex Ferguson's priority is the decisive European Cup game against Barcelona at Old Trafford on Oct. 19.
"It's a big problem that Newcastle are already so far ahead, because we're involved in the Champions' League until the end of December," he said. "We don't want the gap to get any bigger."
Newcastle travels to Aston Villa, which will have had less than two days to recover from its UEFA Cup triumph on penalties over holders Inter Milan.
"We know Everton will come fighting for their lives on Saturday. But we have players who can come in and freshen it up, like (Eric) Cantona, Scholes and (Brian) McClair."
Everton is rooted at the foot of the table on three points after just three draws in seven matches.
Scholes scored twice in United's recent 2-1 League Cup win over Port Vale. He hit another as a substitute in the surprise 3-2 league defeat at Ipswich last Saturday.
