Top Lawyer Shot Dead in Vladivostok

HONG KONG -- The prominent Hong Kong lawyer Gary Alderdice and a female Russian companion have been shot dead in the Far East port city of Vladivostok, the New Zealand Commission in Hong Kong said Thursday.

Alderdice, 48, a New Zealand national, died last Friday and was initially identified as a New Zealand diplomat based in Singapore.

An official said confirmation of Alderdice's identity had been delayed because information the commission initially received about him was wrong.

Alderdice, a deputy crown prosecutor before moving to private practice 10 years ago, and his companion, who has not been identified, were found dead in an apartment, Russian police said.

Alderdice, a Queen's Counsel, was well known in legal, horse racing and business circles in Hong Kong, Macau and New Zealand.
