Prosecutor Steps Down

MEXICO CITY () -- A prosecutor investigating the murder of his powerful politician brother has resigned from his post and Mexico's ruling party, charging that the case would never be solved "without political will."

Deputy Attorney General Mario Ruiz Massieu has shaken Mexico's political structure with charges that high-ranking politicians in the ruling party were behind the Sept. 28 assassination of his brother, Jose Francisco Ruiz Massieu, and that others have blocked his efforts to solve the crime.

The slain man supported democratic reforms proposed by President Carlos Salinas de Gortari. Ruiz Massieu suggested party factions opposed to the reforms were involved in the murder.
