Some Muscovites, jittery over warnings about Chechen terrorist attacks, have been a little too vigilant, leading one newspaper to complain about the capital's "mass psychosis."


When a subway passenger left his bag on the floor in a train Monday and stepped aside to consult a map on the wall, a senior citizen snatched the bag and hurled it out the window, yelling: "I'll save you!"


"Had it not been for other passengers, the hapless bag owner would have killed the old man," Moskovsky Komsomolets daily said Tuesday.


Moskovsky Komsomolets reported similar bomb scares in Mos-cow, saying the "anticipation of terrorist acts has led to mass psychosis."


Last weekend, a policeman spotted an unattended cardboard box in Moscow's central Yaroslavl railway station. He raised the alarm after reading the inscription: "For you, Grandpa, from Chechnya. Happy New Year."


All passengers were evacuated from the terminal, but bomb experts who opened the box discovered it contained cookies.
