Mothers Win Prize

GENEVA () -- A group of Russian soldiers' mothers opposed to the conflict in Chechnya were awarded an international peace prize Monday in recognition of their struggle to help their conscript sons.

The Geneva-based International Peace Bureau said it was awarding its fourth annual Sean MacBride Peace Prize to the Committee of Soldiers' Mothers.

The committee was founded in 1989, devoting itself to campaigning for soldiers' rights in the old Soviet Army and its Russian successor.

But it is in Chechnya that the group has made world headlines.

Hundreds of mothers have followed their sons, many of whom are conscripts, to Chechnya.

In addition, the group has helped them track down the bodies of those killed or establish the whereabouts of those held as prisoners of war.
