Gunboats Sold to Vietnam

Russian shipbuilder Vyimpel will deliver two large military gunboats worth $50 million each to Vietnam this month, a company official said. Vyimpel marketing director Anatoly Stankevich said that the two Molniya boats are equipped with short-range missiles and large-caliber machine-guns. "We are very satisfied with this deal: It will significantly improve our financial position," he said. Vyimpel, based in the town of Ryibinsk, 250 kilometers north of Moscow, manufactures about 10 big and 50 small ships per year, one third of which are for military uses, Stankevich said. According to the state military exporter Rosvooruzheniye, the Southeast Asian market is central to efforts to improve on the $2.1 billion of arms exports Russia sold last year.
