Moscow authorities are planning to distribute free bottled water to commuters at several of the city's metro stations if temperatures exceed 28 degrees C this summer, a spokesman said.

During cooler weather, passengers can also buy bottled water from vending machines at a price of up to 25 rubles ($0.70) at nine stations across the city, chosen because they heat up quickest, the metro press service said in a statement posted on its website.

Vending machines will be installed at nine subway stations across the city, including Dmitrovskaya, Timirazhayevskaya, Savyolovskaya and Petrovsko-Razumovskaya on the Gray Line; Sokol and Aeroport on the Dark Green Line; Tekstilshchiki and Ryazansky Prospekt on the Purple Line; and Belyayevo on the Orange Line.

"We are doing everything possible to make it easier for Muscovites and visitors to endure the heat," the head of the Moscow's transportation department, Maxim Liksutov, was quoted as saying.

Weather forecasters on Monday predicted warm temperatures in Moscow for the rest of the week, increasing steadily to up to 33 degrees C on Friday, the meteorological station said, Interfax reported.
