Cantona Sidelined as United Ties Arsenal

LONDON -- French international striker Eric Cantona was sent off for the second time in four days as Manchester United was held to a 2-2 draw at Arsenal in the English premier league.

Cantona, 27, one of the driving forces during United's challenge to retain the title that it won last season, was sent off for the second successive match after his second bookable offense just two minutes from time on Tuesday.

On Saturday he was dismissed for stamping on defender John Moncur during United's 2-2 draw at Swindon. He faces a three-match ban and a club fine of around ?16,000 ($23,800) for that offense.

This second dismissal will lead to even more disciplinary action against him.

United has now had a player sent off in three of their last four matches with the dismissal of goalkeeper Danish international goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel in the FA Cup quarterfinal against Charlton on March 12.

This underlines the pressures facing the team bidding to become the first in English soccer history to win the Treble -- all three domestic trophies in the same season.

Both United's goals were scored by Lee Sharpe, back in the side for the first time since December.

He gave United the lead after ten minutes, but a 36th minute own goal by Gary Pallister made it 1-1. Sharpe's second put United 2-1 up after 53 minutes, but the Gunners equalized for a second time through Paul Merson 12 minutes from time.

The two points United dropped keeps alive the title hopes of second-placed Blackburn, bidding for its first championship since 1914.

Blackburn now trails United by six points, but has a match in hand and plays the champion at home on Easter Saturday, April 3.

In German action, Wattenscheid's Thomas Ridder scored a minute from time to deny champion Werder Bremen a badly needed league win on Tuesday.

Goals by Marco Bode in the 34th and 62nd minutes appeared enough to carry Bremen to victory until Ridder's late strike tied the score at 2-2.

Bremen, which remains in the hunt for a place in the semifinals of the European Cup, moved up one place to 10th in the Bundesliga.

Wattenscheid remained one from the bottom.
