Burglars Strike Russia's Choice Headquarters

Burglars broke into the Moscow offices of the Yegor Gaidar's political party and stole computers containing information about the alliance's candidates and campaigns, police said Wednesday.

Vladimir Zubkov, spokesman for the city police, said the burglars had taken two computers and a fax machine from the offices of Russia's Choice, the parliamentary faction led by Gaidar.

The computers contained all of the party's information about the its campaign for last December's parliamentary elections its candidates who were elected to the State Duma, according to Andrei Yevstegneyev, deputy head of the Liberal Conservative Policy Center, a Russia's Choice think-tank located in the party's offices on 44 Ulitsa Gertsena.

But both police and party representatives said they did not believe that the crime was politically motivated.

Yevstegneyev said the burglars climbed into the office through a window on the first floor. He said the window had been easy to open, but he could not understand how the burglarly could have happened."There are so many police posts in the area," he said. "It is unclear how they did not notice that someone was climbing into the office."

Police said they have launched an investigation but not detained anyone.
