Baseball Intends to Expand After Clinching Labor Deal

Expansion almost certainly won't occur until the owners and players hammer out a new labor agreement. Negotiations for that deal will begin Monday in Tampa, but it may take a year or more to strike a deal as owners attempt to convince the players to accept a salary cap similar to the National Football League's.

Nevertheless, the summer game appears to be headed toward putting those new teams on the field by 1998. Their arrival would give baseball six five-team divisions and probably mark the start of interleague play.

Tampa-St. Petersburg and Phoenix are solid front-runners for the two slots.
