At the Canadian Open, Bruguera Up, Martin Out

TORONTO -- Top seeded Sergi Bruguera of Spain displayed a proficiency on hardcourts, but second-seeded Todd Martin of the United States quit midway through his second-round match at the $1.72 million Canadian Open tennis tournament.


Bruguera, the two-time reigning king of the French Open, marked his first appearance at this tournament with a 6-1, 6-4 second-round victory over American Jim Grabb on Wednesday.


A right groin injury forced the eighth-ranked Martin to retire against Israeli Amos Mansdorf before beginning a third set. The eighth-ranked Martin won the first set 7-6 (7-4), but the 80th-ranked Mansdorf won the second set 6-3.


The top eight seeds all received first-round byes. Other big names advancing into the third round were third-seeded Michael Chang, fourth-seeded Jim Courier, eighth-seeded Andre Agassi and 12th-seeded Ivan Lendl.


U.S. Women's Hardcourt Championships. Spain's Arantxa Sanchez Vicario and Conchita Martinez, the No. 2 and No. 3 players in the world, breezed through opening round matches Wednesday at Stratton Mountain, Vermont.


Sanchez Vicario ruined the Women's Tennis Association tour debut of amateur Mashona Washington, 6-2, 6-0, in 46 minutes.


Martinez, the defending champion, needed 62 minutes to defeat Stephanie Rottier of the Netherlands, 6-1, 6-1.


Third-seeded Mary Joe Fernandez of the United States subdued Laura Golarsa of Italy 6-2, 6-0. No. 5 Iva Majoli of Croatia ousted veteran American Pam Shriver 6-1, 6-2, and American Ginger Helgeson, No. 7, beat Rachel McQuillan of Australia, 6-3, 7-6 (8-6), in second-round matches.


Dutch Open. No. 3 Spaniard Javier Sanchez and fourth-seeded Dutchman Paul Haarhuis both exited in second-round ties Wednesday.


Unseeded Chilean wildcard entry Marcelo Rios defeated Sanchez 6-4, 0-6, 6-1.


Unseeded Australian Richard Fromberg, ranked 52, made the quarterfinal with a straight sets upset of 27th-ranked Haarhuis, 6-4, 6-4, in 1 1/2 hours.
