5 Extremists Executed

CAIRO () -- The government executed five Islamic extremists Monday for trying to assassinate Egypt's chief security official and killing nine people.

They were among 17 defendants tried for an attack on Interior Minister Hassan el-Alfy last August and the slaying of a key witness in a trial of other Islamic militants. Seven bystanders died in those attacks. The defendants also were charged with slaying a defector from their own fundamentalist group.

The five were all accused of belonging to the militant movement Jihad, or Holy War, that assassinated President Anwar Sadat in 1981.
