42 Businesses On Sale In Estonia Privatization

TALLINN, Estonia -- Estonia has slated 42 enterprises for sale as part of its sell-off campaign, the Privatization Agency said Thursday.

Enterprises to be sold off are in industries ranging from food to construction and consumer markets.

They include four hotels, an exhibition center in the capital Tallinn and a producer of aircraft flight recorders and consumer electronics components in the city of Tartu, which was a key supplier to the Soviet aircraft manufacturing industry.

The closing date for the sell-off tender is Dec. 22, the agency said. It also said it would sell minority stakes in 16 other enterprises.

The companies will be sold for cash at open investment tenders.

Most of the enterprises will be sold off completely, but the state will retain minority stakes in some of them to sell to the public.

Estonia is selling a number of larger enterprises through international tenders in a system modelled on the one used by Germany to sell off former East Germany's industry.
