2 Rallies on March 31

The liberal opposition remains split on Strategy 31 rallies, filing two requests for separate rallies in Moscow on the last day of March, Interfax said Wednesday.

Rights veteran Lyudmila Alexeyeva plans to lead 3,000 people to Pushkin Square to celebrate Article 31 of the Constitution granting freedom of assembly.

Alexeyeva used to co-organize the event with activist Eduard Limonov, but they had a falling-out last fall. Limonov plans to bring 2,500 protesters to Triumfalnaya Ploshchad on March 31, though the venue is also being sought by the pro-Kremlin Young Russia group.

City Hall did not say Wednesday whether it would authorize the rallies.
