Russia and Egypt Planning Definitive Military Cooperation Agreement

Russia and Egypt plan to sign a military cooperation agreement that Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said will define the expanding bilateral defense relations between the two nations, the TASS news agency reported Tuesday.

"This document will for many years determine the direction of our cooperation in the military sphere," Shoigu said at the opening of talks with Egyptian Defense Minister Sidqi Sobqi in Moscow on Tuesday.

The deal will see Egyptian officers and troops trained in Russian military academies and focus on joint counter-terrorism efforts, Shoigu said.

Russia and Egypt have grown closer in recent years and Moscow is negotiating a multibillion dollar arms sale to the country, which has been a strong U.S. ally for decades.
