Moscow Buildings: Onward and Upward
Many visitors to Moscow can't help but be astonished by the diversity of its architecture; some districts look like monuments to the Soviet era, when the idea of personal space was regarded as "anti-Communist" and everyone lived in apartments that were small and similar.
The most popular type of apartment building for many years during this time was the cheap, concrete-paneled "Khrushchyovka."
At around the same time, however, many massive high-rise buildings started to be erected — some of which were intended to house powerful bureaucrats and the social elite.

Today, modern buildings in Moscow aspire to be free in architecture and design: There is no longer any control over how high they should be or what style of architecture should be chosen.
Their main characteristics tend to be unique design, spacious apartments and high-quality materials. Only a few hundreds meters from the Moscow River stands the new face of this modern movement: the Moscow-City business center.
