STOCKHOLM — Tele2 reported third-quarter profit as it expanded in Russia, chief executive Mats Granryd said Wednesday.
Net income was 1.26 billion kronor ($190 million), declining from 2.48 billion kronor a year earlier when it booked a tax gain. Revenue from continuing operations gained 3.4 percent to 10.3 billion kronor from 10 billion kronor last year. The operator signed up 681,000 new Russian customers in the quarter through channels including food stores and post offices, bringing its base in the country to 20.4 million.
TeliaSonera net income declined to 4.86 billion kronor from 5.99 billion kronor a year ago, TeliaSonera chief executive Lars Nyberg said Wednesday.
Revenue fell 1 percent to 26.6 billion kronor. Appreciation of the kronor against the ruble reduced returns from MegaFon, TeliaSonera said. It holds a stake in the Russian operation together with Altimo, the telecommunications arm of Alfa Group.

A Message from The Moscow Times:
Dear readers,
We are facing unprecedented challenges. Russia's Prosecutor General's Office has designated The Moscow Times as an "undesirable" organization, criminalizing our work and putting our staff at risk of prosecution. This follows our earlier unjust labeling as a "foreign agent."
These actions are direct attempts to silence independent journalism in Russia. The authorities claim our work "discredits the decisions of the Russian leadership." We see things differently: we strive to provide accurate, unbiased reporting on Russia.
We, the journalists of The Moscow Times, refuse to be silenced. But to continue our work, we need your help.
Your support, no matter how small, makes a world of difference. If you can, please support us monthly starting from just $2. It's quick to set up, and every contribution makes a significant impact.
By supporting The Moscow Times, you're defending open, independent journalism in the face of repression. Thank you for standing with us.
