Machinery Blamed for Losses

Russia foregoes 15 million to 20 million metric tons of grain it could harvest annually because of equipment deficiencies, according to agricultural sciences institute Rosselkhozakademia.

The losses, together with 1 million tons of meat and 7 million tons of milk, are attributable to "simplified, extensive technologies and an extremely low level of modern equipment in agricultural production," Ivan Gorbachev, an academic in the institute's agricultural equipment department, said Thursday at a conference in Moscow.

Russia needs 280,000 new tractors and 90,000 combine harvesters to gather all the grain it has the potential to produce, according to Gorbachev's presentation.

"We need vehicles or will develop agriculture with shovels," he said.

Russia's grain crop may reach 90 million to 92 million tons in the year through June, with consumption at 72 million tons, Viktor Zubkov, first deputy prime minister, said Tuesday.

A Message from The Moscow Times:

Dear readers,

We are facing unprecedented challenges. Russia's Prosecutor General's Office has designated The Moscow Times as an "undesirable" organization, criminalizing our work and putting our staff at risk of prosecution. This follows our earlier unjust labeling as a "foreign agent."

These actions are direct attempts to silence independent journalism in Russia. The authorities claim our work "discredits the decisions of the Russian leadership." We see things differently: we strive to provide accurate, unbiased reporting on Russia.

We, the journalists of The Moscow Times, refuse to be silenced. But to continue our work, we need your help.

Your support, no matter how small, makes a world of difference. If you can, please support us monthly starting from just $2. It's quick to set up, and every contribution makes a significant impact.

By supporting The Moscow Times, you're defending open, independent journalism in the face of repression. Thank you for standing with us.
