Signing Near On Russian Weapon Deal

KUWAIT -- Kuwait has reached an advanced stage in talks with Moscow on buying Russian arms, Defense Minister Sheikh Ahmad al-Hamoud al-Sabah said.

"We have not signed the deal yet. We are negotiating the deal with the Russian government," said Sheikh Ahmad said Tuesday. He said negotiations had reached an advanced stage, but refused to give details on what weapons were involved.

Diplomats said the deal might include missile launching systems and around 40 Russian BMP-3 armored fighting vehicles.

Kuwait currently has 39 Russian BMB-2 armored fighting vehicles, according to the London-based International Institute for Strategic Studies.

One diplomat said the deal could be worth $800 million.

Kuwait in 1992 set aside 3.5 billion dinars ($11.8 billion) for buying arms and improving its armed forces, and has already made several deals.
