Russia Won't Attend 'Friends of Syria' Conference

A foreign ministry spokesperson said Tuesday that Russia will not be able to participate in the Friends of Syria summit to take place in Tunis on Friday, calling it a meeting with unclear goals determined by other countries.

The conference was announced last week by Arab ministers, Reuters reported. World powers will reportedly gather for it to discuss how to help Syria exit its violent political crisis.

Foreign ministry spokesperson Alexander Lukashevich said information about the meeting is limited and took issue with the fact that the Syrian government seems to have been excluded from attendance, RIA-Novosti reported.

"We have not officially been told who the participants will be or who is invited, what the agenda will be. Most importantly, it's unclear what the real aim of this initiative is," Lukashevich said.

"According to the news [we have] received, individual opposition groups have been invited to Tunis, but representatives of the Syrian government have not been invited to the conference," he said.

"According to the information [we have] received, a narrow group of countries is already working on [the concluding resolution] without telling other participants, who will simply be asked to stamp this document," he said.

… we have a small favor to ask.
