Moscow Targets MKAD in Traffic Jam Fight

Large trucks will be banned from the Moscow Ring Road during peak hours from February, a move that will reduce traffic flows by a third, a deputy mayor said Monday.

Trucks weighing more than 12 tons will be barred from traveling on the road between 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. starting Feb. 1, Deputy Mayor Maxim Liksutov said.

"We believe this will relieve [traffic on] the city highway — the Moscow Ring Road — by 30 percent," he said on Moscow 24 television, according to Interfax.

Liksutov's announcement is the latest initiative by City Hall to fight the capital's notorious traffic jams. Mayor Sergei Sobyanin promised to make the fight a hallmark of his leadership when he took office in late 2010.
