Georgian Opposition Leader Signs Accord With United Russia

Georgian opposition leader Zurab Noghaideli, a former prime minister, signed a deal to work together with ruling party United Russia, 17 months after the Russian-Georgian war over the rebel Georgian region of South Ossetia.

"Zurab Noghaideli signed the cooperation agreement” with State Duma Speaker and senior United Russia leader Boris Gryzlov in Moscow on Tuesday, the former prime minister’s spokeswoman, Khatuna Modebadze, said by phone from Tbilisi.

“He will speak more on the details when he gets back in two days,” she said.

Noghaideli became Georgia’s prime minister in 2005 and was removed from office in November 2007 as President Mikheil Saakashvili lifted a state of emergency declared after violent clashes between police and opposition protesters.

Noghaideli moved into opposition a year later.
