At Least 33 Dead After Volgograd Bomb Attacks

The combined death toll in two suicide bombings in Volgograd climbed to 33 on Tuesday morning after one more victim died in a hospital on Monday night.

Another 65 victims are still being treated for their injuries, a report from the Volgograd branch of the Emergency Situations Minsitry said, Interfax reported.

Out of the 33 casualties, 18 were the result of a suicide bomb attack at Volgograd's train station on Dec. 29, that is believed to have been carried out by a man named Pavel Pechenkin, a native of the Mari El republic who converted to Islam and joined an insurgency group in Dagestan in spring 2012.

Another 15 people were killed in a separate blast the next morning when an explosion ripped through a trolleybus.

The twin explosions brought the number of terrorist attacks in the southern city up to three in the past two months, and has raised security concerns over the upcoming 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi.
