10 Die in Road Accident en Route to Wedding

Ten people, including an infant, died in the early hours of Sunday morning when a minivan carrying wedding guests to a ceremony in the Stavropol region collided with a truck on a federal highway.

A source in the regional police told RIA-Novosti that the collision occurred just after midnight on the Kochubei-Mineralniye Vody road, when the driver of the Russian-made GAZ minivan swerved into a lane of oncoming traffic.

Police believe the driver may have fallen asleep at the wheel or suffered from health complications. Drunkenness was not mentioned as a potential cause of the accident, in which six passengers died at the scene.

Three others and the driver of the DAF truck died en route to a local hospital, according to the news agency.

It was not immediately clear how many passengers were traveling in the GAZ minivan at the time of the crash, which came just a week after another minivan collided with a Chevrolet sedan locally.

Seven passengers were injured in that incident, although there were no fatalities, regional emergency officials said in a statement on their website.
