The Defense Ministry has established a system for advanced research and military technology to identify breakthrough technologies across the country for the use by the Russian military, said General Yevgeny Cherdakov, the head of the Defense Ministry's analytical and information center, on Wednesday.
The new organization includes units of the ministry's Moscow headquarters, regional centers in St. Petersburg, Vladivostok, Novosibirsk and other major military and industrial centers as well as the ministry's robotics research institute and elements of different branches of the armed forces, the general told journalists.
"The system's main goal is to provide the Russian Federation with technical superiority in fields with military applications, leading to Russia's overall technical superiority," Cherdakov said.
He noted that the new structure would not duplicate the work of the Advanced Research Foundation working under the government's Military Industrial Commission, as the new system will focus primarily on the development of military technology.
According to the general, the research system's predecessor, the Defense Solutions Bureau created in 2010, has proven its effectiveness with eight new projects included brought to fruition as firm orders in 2012.
At the end of last year, Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu authorized the new research system's creation on the basis of the Defense Solutions Bureau, Interfax reported.
