A Russian man was arrested for the stabbing of a police cadet in a Moscow metro station, RIA Novosti news agency reported Friday.

The 30-year-old Muscovite, whose name was not disclosed, was arrested by the Cheryomushki district court after the city's Investigative Committee opened a criminal investigation into the incident, metro police spokesman Alexei Myshlyaev said, RIA Novosti reported.

The suspect allegedly approached a group of students on the platform of the Teatralnaya metro station as they boarded a train, and stabbed one of them in the back with a knife before fleeing.

The victim, a police cadet and freshman at Moscow State Police University, sought assistance at the next station.

The attack was recorded by the security cameras and the suspected attacker was arrested shortly after at his apartment.

During the initial interrogation, the man announced that he is a former nationalist skinhead who converted to Islam while imprisoned for a previous police attack, an anonymous source within the police force told RIA Novosti.

The man has never been admitted to a mental institution and generally acts normally, but his behavior casts some doubts on his mental health, the anonymous source said.
