An alleged Russian intelligence officer has been arrested in the Italian capital of Rome while receiving secret documents from a Portuguese spy, Britain's Telegraph newspaper reported Wednesday.

Frederico Carvalhão, an agent from Portugal's SIS intelligence service, was identified as selling Russia information related to NATO and the European Union, the newspaper wrote.

The agents have met regularly since 2014 in different European capitals, the Telegraph reported. The Portuguese spy received 10,000 euros ($11,000) for every secret secret document passed to his Russian handler.

The name of the Russian intelligence officer has not been disclosed and Moscow is yet to confirm the arrest.
