A fire at the St. Petersburg Technology Institute has been put out, but 600 square meters of the building's roof collapsed in the process, Interfax reported.

The fire at the institute, located on 26 Moskovsky Prospekt, was reported at 9.30 p.m Wednesday, the Emergency Situations Ministry said.

By 1 a.m. Thursday firefighters had managed to extinguish the blaze which had spread over 2,000 square meters, engulfing the attic, the roof and upper floor of the five-story building.

When the fire broke out, lessons at the institute were already finished and the building was empty, Vesti FM reported.

According to preliminary data, the fire could have been caused by repairs that were being carried out on the roof of the building.
