Posthumous Trial of Magnitsky to Start March 11

On March 11, a Moscow court will start the posthumous trial of anti-corruption lawyer Sergei Magnitsky, whose death in custody has hurt Russia's image and strained Moscow's ties with the United States.

A spokeswoman for Moscow's Tverskoi Court said the date had been set after a pretrial hearing Monday.

Magnitsky, a lawyer at investment fund Hermitage Capital Management, was arrested shortly after accusing state officials of a $230 million theft. He died in 2009 after 358 days in pretrial detention on suspicion of tax fraud.

No one has been brought to trial for Magnitsky's death.

His death has strained ties between Moscow and Washington since U.S. lawmakers passed a bill named after him that attempts to punish Russians involved in his case and those accused of violating human rights.
