Police have set up checkpoints to inspect vehicles coming in and out of the Altai region's Tselinny district after a local man died from anthrax, a news report said Sunday.
Police told Interfax that they had taken the measure to prevent meat and dairy products from being transported out of the area and that police officers were out in force to maintain law and order.
Sunday's measures follow the death of a man from the Tselinny district village of Druzhba (Friendship), where nine cases of anthrax have been reported in total. The anthrax victims were still being treated in a hospital in the nearby city of Biisk on Sunday.
Media reports said a cow grazing in the village was the likely source of the bacterial infection, which can be transmitted to humans and cause a form of pneumonia.
Investigators said in a statement on their website that they too would run a check into the anthrax outbreak.
