A Palestinian man who "did not want to leave his family" murdered his lover by pouring acid on her, then drove her body to a forest in her own car and set it on fire, Russian investigators say.

The body was found in the burned-out car in a mountainous part of Russia's southern Stavropol region on Saturday, some eight days after she is believed to have been killed.

Investigators believe that the 33-year-old man murdered the 34-year-old woman at a dacha near the region's second-largest city, Pyatigorsk.

A formal statement released by the Stavropol Investigative Committee was short on details, merely explaining that the man's reluctance to leave his family sparked the dispute initially.

The Komsomolskaya Pravda newspaper reported on Tuesday, however, that the man's lover wanted him to leave his wife for her.
