Medvedev, Obama Push Arms Pact

Presidents Dmitry Medvedev and Barack Obama agreed Wednesday to urge their negotiators to speed up work and prepare for signing a new START deal to cut strategic nuclear weapons, the Kremlin said in a statement.

"The Russian side stressed the importance of completing the talks within a short term to prepare this document — vital for strategic security and stability — for signing as soon as possible," the Kremlin said Medvedev's telephone conversation with Obama.

General Nikolai Makarov, chief of the General Staff, said earlier Wednesday that Moscow and Washington were likely to sign the deal soon.

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton on Tuesday urged Russia to wrap up negotiations quickly during a telephone conversation with Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
